What If Mosquitoes Went Extinct?

Your first instinct is to celebrate. Mine too. Mosquitoes kill more humans than any other animal on Earth. Malaria alone killed 608,000 people in 2022 according to the WHO. Dengue, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile, chikungunya: all transmitted by mosquitoes. If you could press a button and remove every mosquito from existence, most people would press it without hesitating.

The hesitation comes after.

What mosquitoes actually do

There are about 3,500 species of mosquito. Only around 100 of those bite humans. Only the females bite at all (they need blood protein for egg development, not food). Males eat nectar. Many species bite birds, reptiles or amphibians instead of mammals.

And here's the part that complicates your button-pressing: mosquitoes pollinate plants. Both males and females feed on flower nectar as their primary energy source. For some plants, particularly certain orchid species in the subarctic, mosquitoes are the main pollinator. Not the best pollinator. The main one. The only one that shows up in sufficient numbers.

They're also food. Mosquito larvae are aquatic, and they're eaten in vast quantities by fish, dragonfly larvae, beetles and other freshwater invertebrates. Adult mosquitoes feed bats, birds, spiders and dragonflies. In the Arctic tundra, where mosquitoes hatch in enormous swarms during the brief summer, they're a significant food source for migratory birds.

And the larvae themselves are filter feeders. They eat microorganisms and organic detritus in standing water, and in doing so they help process nutrients in aquatic ecosystems. They're not just hanging about waiting to grow up and bite you. They're working.

The Arctic problem

This is where the impact would be felt most sharply.

In the Canadian Arctic and Siberian tundra, mosquitoes emerge in swarms so thick they've been measured at 280,000 per square metre in some locations. These clouds of insects are annoying to humans but essential to the ecosystem. Migratory birds time their breeding season to coincide with the mosquito hatch because the larvae and adults provide food for their chicks.

Remove mosquitoes and those birds lose a major food source during the most energy-intensive period of their year. Some species would adapt by eating more midges or blackflies. Others, particularly specialists, might not be able to switch quickly enough. Bird populations in the Arctic could decline within a few breeding seasons.

Caribou behaviour changes too. Caribou herds in northern Canada are partly driven by mosquitoes. The animals move to higher, windier ground during peak mosquito season to escape the swarms. This migration pattern affects their grazing, which affects vegetation, which affects soil, which affects permafrost thaw rates. It sounds tenuous, but ecology is chains of consequence, and this one has been studied.

Freshwater ecosystems

Mosquito larvae are a food source for freshwater fish worldwide. In many ponds, temporary pools and slow-moving streams, they're one of the most abundant invertebrates available. Removing them removes a link in the food web.

Would the fish starve? Probably not. Most mosquito-eating fish also eat other aquatic invertebrates: midge larvae, water fleas, small worms. The gap left by mosquito larvae would likely be filled by population growth in competing species. Midges, which occupy a similar ecological niche, would probably expand to fill the space.

But "probably" and "likely" are doing a lot of work in that paragraph. Ecologists who've studied this question tend to avoid confident predictions. A 2010 article in Nature asked mosquito researchers whether the world would be worse off without mosquitoes, and the consensus was a cautious "probably not, but we're not sure." That level of uncertainty from experts who've spent careers studying the subject should give you pause before pressing the button.

Disease disappears (mostly)

This is the overwhelming argument in favour. No mosquitoes means no mosquito-borne disease. Malaria, which has killed more humans than any single cause in history (estimates range up to half of all humans who have ever lived), simply stops.

The public health impact is almost incalculable. Sub-Saharan Africa, where 95% of malaria deaths occur, would be transformed. The economic burden of malaria alone costs affected African countries an estimated $12 billion per year in lost productivity and healthcare spending. Remove that and you've changed the economic trajectory of an entire continent.

Dengue, which infects up to 400 million people annually, gone. Zika, which caused thousands of birth defects in Brazil in 2015-16, gone. Yellow fever, West Nile, lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis): all gone.

It's hard to overstate what this means. Hundreds of thousands of lives saved every year. Millions of people freed from chronic illness. Children in tropical regions growing up without the constant threat of a lethal infection transmitted by something the size of a grain of rice.

The replacement question

Nature doesn't leave gaps for long. The ecological niches occupied by mosquitoes (aquatic filter feeder, aerial food source, blood-feeding pollinator) would be filled by other organisms over time. Midges are the most likely candidate. They breed in similar habitats, feed similar predators and some species also bite.

But the transition period matters. Ecological gaps, even ones that eventually get filled, cause disruption while they're open. Species that depended heavily on mosquitoes have to find alternatives or decline. Food webs reorganise. It's not a clean swap. It's a period of instability followed by a new equilibrium that might look quite different from what came before.

And some niches might not get filled at all. The specific role of mosquitoes as pollinators for certain Arctic and tropical plants has no obvious replacement. Those plants could decline or disappear, with knock-on effects for the species that depend on them.

Would you press the button?

I would. The maths is too stark. Over half a million human deaths per year, most of them children under five, against an ecological disruption that is real but probably recoverable. The Arctic food web takes a hit. Some plants lose a pollinator. Freshwater ecosystems reorganise. These are genuine costs.

But 608,000 people died of malaria in 2022. Most of them were under five years old. Most of them lived in places with the fewest resources to cope. That number resets every twelve months.

The mosquitoes would not be missed as much as the children.
